Ok, so this has been bugging me for a while and i’ve been shrugging it off because people are idiots…but I cant hold it in much longer after recent happenings.
I am a gamer. I love my Xbox more than anything and take care of it like it’s my child. I even gave it a name the day I brought it home (Xavier…because I know you wanted to know). Recently, I posted a comment about Xbox on a Facebook page dedicated to gaming. The page has thousands of subscribers, indeed very popular.
Immediately, my comment was funny enough to get 40+ likes, which I was actually quite proud of, and many comments and replies. When I read the replies though, I grew shocked, annoyed and insulted. Many of the comments were rude, directed at me being a female, how I belong in a kitchen (which I think those can actually be hilarious when said at the proper time… xD), followed by someone actually calling me a “slut” and a “fake girl gamer.” Now I assume this is because my profile picture is of myself wearing my turtle beach headphones on a night where I was about to play. The ongoing point that many gamers make about us female nerds is that some girls do dress up with games and controllers to take hot pictures and get attention from horny ass boys who think it’s “so fucking sexy.”
This is where I REALLY start to get angry. Not every female gamer has to look a certain way. Yes, some girls do that kind of stuff for attention, but excuse me if I like to wear make up and play my games. I wear make up all the time because I think it is fun to play around with, and I took a picture that night because I had JUST purchased my headset and was feeling proud of my gaming career. Boys give me generous amounts of shit for being a beautiful nerd. (Yes, I am confidant enough to say I am beautiful, no that doesn’t make me full of myself.) I never expected it to be this way.
Finding my place in the virtual world, playing online in a community that is made up mainly of males, I did assume I would get my fair amount of attention for going against the norm. The majority of the time, it is not nice attention. It’s either rudeness, jealousy (cause I kick a fair amount of ass on Halo), or sexual harassment. I’ve been able to shrug it off for quite some time but it is getting ridiculous.
I just want to make myself clear…the point we are all waiting for…
I DO NOT consider myself a girl gamer. You know what I am? A gamer, a nerd, and a person who has a love for virtual worlds. Why must we put gender on something we are passionate about? I spend all day playing games not for the attention but because I am in love with the stories, the characters, the action and the strategy. I think I speak for many of my fellow gamers when I say:
Shut the fuck up about our boobs, fine asses and vaginas and let us play in peace.
